I am ZHOU Qilin, an organic chemistry professor from the Chemistry College, Nankai University in China. It is our great privilege to hold the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO2022) at Nankai University in Tianjin, China in 2022.This is the second event in China mainland as the 27th IChO was held in Peking University in 1995. As the chairman of the Scientific Committee of the IChO2022, I am very pleased to welcome you all to the IChO2022 in China. I hope you will enjoy the event in Tianjin and take back many pleasant memories with you.

Chemistry is the science that studies the composition, structure, properties and chemical changes of substances. As the central science, Chemistry not only connects with other scientific disciplines but also affects our lives. The knowledge derived from chemistry allows us to know, change and improve the world we live in. Chinese civilization has made outstanding contributions to chemistry, such as gunpowder and papermaking among the four great inventions, as well as ancient Chinese alchemy, bronze ware, Chinese herbal medicine, the first artificial synthesis of bovine insulin and so on. I sincerely hope that the talented young chemists who will shape chemistry and our world in the future will develop quickly. We would like to make our contributions to the development of these young chemists in the IChO2022 in Tianjin. 

There is an old saying in China: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. I hope all of you will study chemistry, enjoy chemistry, and use chemistry to change the world.
